BMI, BMR and TDEE Explained: What the Numbers Actually Mean

BMI, BMR and TDEE get thrown around a lot — on nutrition labels, fitness apps, doctor's office intake forms — but it's easy to use all three without ever being told what they're actually calculating, or how much to trust the result.

BMI: a population screening tool, not a personal diagnosis

Body Mass Index is simply weight divided by height squared (kg/m²). It was developed in the 1830s by a Belgian mathematician, Adolphe Quetelet, as a way to study averages across large populations — not as a tool for assessing any one individual's health. The World Health Organization and most national health bodies still use BMI ranges (underweight, normal, overweight, obese) because it's cheap, fast and correlates reasonably well with health risk across large groups.

Its well-known weakness is that it can't distinguish muscle from fat. A muscular athlete and a sedentary person of the same height and weight will get the identical BMI number, despite very different body compositions and health profiles. It also doesn't account for age, sex-based differences in typical body composition, or where on the body weight is carried (which matters more for cardiovascular risk than total weight alone). Use BMI as a quick, free screening number — not as the final word on anyone's health.

BMR: what your body burns doing nothing at all

Basal Metabolic Rate is an estimate of how many calories your body uses in a day if you did absolutely nothing but rest — keeping your heart beating, your organs functioning, your body temperature stable. It's typically the largest single component of daily calorie burn for most people, often 60-75% of total energy expenditure.

There are several formulas for estimating it. The older Harris-Benedict equation dates to 1919 (revised in 1984); the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, published in 1990, is generally considered more accurate for modern populations and is what most calculators — Toolnova's included — default to today. Both formulas need the same basic inputs: weight, height, age and sex, because all four measurably affect resting metabolism. No formula can account for individual variation in muscle mass, thyroid function, genetics or medication, which is why two people with identical stats can have meaningfully different real BMR — the formula gives you a solid estimate to start from, not a lab-measured number.

TDEE: BMR plus everything else you do

Total Daily Energy Expenditure takes BMR and multiplies it by an activity factor to estimate total calories burned in a full day, including movement, exercise and the energy cost of digesting food. This is the number most relevant to weight management, since it represents your actual maintenance calorie level — eat consistently above it and you'll gain weight over time, consistently below it and you'll lose weight, roughly speaking.

The activity multiplier is the least precise part of the calculation, because "moderately active" means something different to everyone who selects it. It's common for people to overestimate how active they actually are, which inflates the TDEE estimate and can stall weight-loss efforts that are calculated from a number that was too high to begin with. If a calculated TDEE doesn't seem to match real-world results after a few consistent weeks of tracking, trust the real-world data over the formula — the formula is a starting estimate, and your own tracked results are the more accurate personal number.
